Spendthrift meet-and-greet Rewarding

The Spendthrift Farm team was kept busy during the Great Southern Sale taking bookings to its four foundation stallions.

Australian general manager Garry Cuddy along with farm managers Rick & Christie Woodard and Spendthrift’s Kentucky based Brian Lyle were at Oaklands Junctions to meet-and-greet breeders from Sunday through Wednesday.

“The response from everyone was positive,” Cuddy said.  “We’re not far away from closing Warrior’s Reward on the Share the Upside program.”

Warrior’s Reward is a son of boom sire Medaglia d’Oro and he cracked a stakes winning double in the USA earlier this month with Requite and Warriorscmoutoplay.

The Steve Asmussen trained Show Bound is another colt with a black-type future.  He was placed on a turf debut at Belmont Park and connections then stepped him up to the G3 Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs.

Warrior’s Reward is a Top 6 stallion on the North American second-season premiership this year with 25 individual winners of $1.32 million.  His stock are in demand and one of his fillies made $170,000 at the Ocala 2YO Sale last Thursday.

The Ocala Sale also featured a colt by Spendthrift stallion Into Mischief that was second on the Florida leader-board at $575,000.

Into Mischief is a half-brother to two-time Eclipse champion Beholder who is raced by Spendthrift owner B Wayne Hughes.  The Henny Hughes mare is in training for a third Breeders’ Cup victory at Santa Anita in October.

Spendthrift will also stand its champion sire Malibu Moon to southern hemisphere time for a $25,000 fee this year.  “We were considering sending Malibu Moon down to Australia,” Lyle said.  “But he’s 18 now and it’s probably a bit late to start shuttling him.”

Spendthrift Australia will stand four stallions on its inaugural roster – Warrior’s Reward (Medaglia d’Oro), Hampton Court (Redoute’s Choice), Jimmy Creed (Distorted Humor), and Can the Man (Into Mischief).
