Sizzling strikes at Gold Coast March Sale

A first-crop son of Newgate Farm sire Sizzling topped the Millions Gold Coast March yearling sale on Tuesday.

The striking chestnut was catalogued at the tail-end of the two-day sale and attracted strong interest before a final bid of $160,000 from Sydney trainer Gary Moore.  Consigned by Gleeson Thoroughbreds, he’s from Crimson Belle (Red Ransom), a three quarter sister to G3 Kindergarten Stakes winner Crimson Reign.

“He was the colt of the sale,” Moore said.  “I really like Sizzling – he was a great Magic Millions graduate and I’m hoping this colt will run as well as he looks.

“He looks a natural early two-year-old and will be set for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic in January.”

Colts by Top Echelon and Written Tycoon both sold for $150,000 on Monday.

Leading trainer Matthew Dunn bought the Top Echelon colt from Idesa Bay who has already foaled five winners including Group performer Cerberus Gal.  “The colt is very typical of the nice Top Echelons,” Dunn said.  “He’s a strong, good looking colt.”

Melbourne syndicator Rob Slade purchased the Written Tycoon colt from Raheen Stud.  He’s from winning Black Minnaloushe mare Lou and hails from the family of former champion galloper Bonecrusher.

“He’s a nice colt who will continue to furnish being a November foal,” Slade said. “I loved his walk.  It’s been very hard to buy a Written Tycoon this year – I’m delighted to have one now to syndicate.”

The sale grossed over $8.58 million and an average of $28,815 while the clearance rate was 81%.  All figures were up slightly on last year’s corresponding auction.

“The sale was a mirror image of 2016,” Magic Millions managing director Vin Cox said.  “The market was aggressive on quality bloodstock and there are obvious reasons while others struggled.”
