Rosemont Stud retires Tarzino

Group 1 classic winner Tarzino (NZ) has been retired and will likely stand in New Zealand instead of Australia.

Tarzino (4h Tavistock – Zarzino by Zabeel) won the G1 Victoria Derby and G1 Rosehill Guineas last season but a ligament injury forced him out of the spring carnival and a six-month rehab program would have also ruled out an autumn campaign.

Victorian-based Rosemont Stud owner Anthony Mithen bought the standing rights to the Kiwi-bred stallion earlier this year.  He was the second Rosehill Guineas winner for Rosemont following Tavistock gelding Volkstok’n’barrell in 2015.

“Middle distance horses have to be placed properly to maximise their best chances at stud,” Mithen said.  “That may be at Rosemont but it may also be with a farm in New Zealand.

“There’s been some considerable interest from top-end operations over there.  We’re assessing all the options and hopefully we will have something sorted out in a month.

“I’m sure there would be breeders that would support him in Victoria, whereas the majority of breeders in New Zealand would love to send a mare to the best son of Tavistock.”

Tavistock (Montjeu) received over 300 applications from breeders for his services at Cambridge Stud this year.

His fee has risen from $7,000 to $15,000 to $65,000 with stakes winners the calibre of Volkstok’n’barrell, Werther, Hasselhoof, Avisto, Longchamp, Tavy & Titanium arriving in his first two crops.
