Westbury Park sire Lucky Unicorn continued his winning run on Saturday with three winners on either side of the Tasman.

LUCKY ROMANCE (3f Lucky Unicorn – Ion You by Geiger Counter) finally put it all together as an odds-on favourite second-up after a spell at Tatura.  The Peter Moody trained filly was flushed out four wide approaching the corner but sustained a long sprint to score by a neck in the Tomato Industry Maiden (1400m).

“It was a good win,” jockey Regan Bayliss said.  “She’s a nice staying filly going forward.”

Lucky Romance had been in the wars in all four starts last year.  The stewards variously reported she required a vet test after one loss and pulled up lame in another.  She was also inconvenienced and had to be eased down in the other two outings.

Earlier on Saturday, Lucky Unicorn had sired a diverse double at Hastings in New Zealand.  The first-leg was a 2yo filly winning over 1400m and he backed that up with a 5yo gelding who bolted in by four lengths over 2500m.

EXQUISITE JEWEL (2f Lucky Unicorn – Game Duchess by Montjeu) won the Hawke’s Bay Easter Maiden (1400m) and the addition of a tongue tie made a big difference after her unplaced debut behind Caduceus at Waverley last month.

Caduceus is another 2yo filly by Lucky Unicorn and she went on to capture the LR Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Ellerslie on April 12.

Exquisite Jewel is a younger sister of Duchessofcambridge who is back in work with Kevin Myers after winning three races last year.  The bottom line of their pedigree reads Game Duchess – Mazarine – Marquise – Eight Carat!

I’ll’ava’alf had shown real promise as a stayer last year and he underlined that assessment with a decisive victory in the Te Whangai Romneys Easter Hcp (2500m) at Hastings.

A homebred for Matamata trainer Karen Fursdon, he is a versatile first-crop son of Lucky Unicorn having won on a Good 3 at Avondale last month and a Heavy 10 on Saturday.  And he was good enough to be used as a galloping companion for Puccini earlier this month prior to the NZ Derby winner heading to Sydney.

I’LL’AVA’ALF (5g Lucky Unicorn – Phillipa Glass by Volksraad) is from a sister to One Under who was the 1999 New Zealand’s Champion 2YO following Group 1 victories in the Ellerslie & Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes.

Lucky Unicorn has been represented by the winners of 15 races in the last month and, apart from Caduceus, he also sired Rock Diva to a Group 3 victory in the Sunline Vase at Ellerslie.

A stakes winning son of Redoute’s Choice, he stood at Westbury Park in Pinjarra last year for a $4,400 (inc gst) service fee.
